The Shiawasee river
Shiawassee River Kayaking Guide (Michigan Water Trail)
The Shiawassee River is one of Michigan’s most scenic and beginner-friendly paddling rivers, winding roughly 100 miles through wetlands, farmland, and quiet river towns before eventually feeding into the Saginaw River system. Known for its slow current, wildlife-rich corridors, and accessible launch points, it’s a perfect fit for both casual day paddles and longer adventure trips.
Most of the river is Class I (easy moving water) with occasional riffles and seasonal variations depending on rainfall and dam releases, making it ideal for beginners, families, and intermediate paddlers looking to explore longer stretches.
River Overview
- Location: Southeast & Central Michigan (Livingston → Shiawassee → Saginaw Counties)
- Total Length: ~100 miles of navigable water
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate (Class I, occasional mild Class II in high flow)
- Water Type: Slow-moving river, wetlands, lake transitions
- Best Season: April – October
- Flow Conditions: Best paddling typically 200–1,000 CFS depending on section
- Character: Winding, scenic, wildlife-heavy, and very paddle-friendly
What Makes the Shiawassee Special
The Shiawassee is known as a true “river that twists back on itself,” with long sweeping bends, quiet oxbows, and marsh transitions that make it feel remote even when near towns. Paddlers often spot:
- Blue herons, egrets, and bald eagles
- Beavers, turtles, and otters
- Quiet backwater wetlands and forest corridors
- Historic small towns and bridge crossings
Lower sections near the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge turn into expansive wetland paddling with minimal current—perfect for photography and nature floats.

- Several sections include dams requiring portage
- Water levels can vary significantly after rain or drought

- Always check current flow conditions before launching
For most paddlers, this river is safe and approachable—but it still rewards awareness and basic river reading skills.
Best Time to Paddle
