Trip Difficulty & Adventure Rating System

Know Before You Go

Not every West Michigan Kayaking Club adventure is the same.

Our trips range from introductory paddles to long-distance river expeditions involving significant mileage, fast current, portages, remote stretches of river, hiking, camping, and changing conditions.

To help paddlers choose the right adventure, West Michigan Kayaking Club uses a five-level Trip Difficulty Scale.

Always read the complete event description before registering. A trip’s difficulty can change because of water levels, weather, current, fallen trees, portages, temperature, or other conditions.

🟢 LEVEL 1 — BEGINNER

Easy Adventure

Designed for newer paddlers and those building confidence.

Typical characteristics:

  • Up to approximately 8 miles
  • Generally calm or slow-moving water
  • Minimal current
  • Few obstacles
  • Easy launches and landings
  • Little or no portaging
  • Frequent opportunities to stop
  • Shorter time on the water

Experience: Basic kayaking skills recommended.

Fitness: Low to moderate.

Best for: Newer paddlers, families, and anyone looking for an easier introduction to the club.

🔵 LEVEL 2 — INTERMEDIATE

Active Paddling

A step up in distance, pace, current, and overall physical demand.

Typical characteristics:

  • Approximately 8–15 miles
  • Moving water and moderate current
  • Some obstacles or narrow sections
  • Occasional portages
  • Moderate paddling pace
  • Several hours on the water
  • More limited opportunities to exit the river

Experience: Comfortable controlling a kayak on moving water.

Fitness: Moderate.

Best for: Paddlers with some experience who are ready for longer, more active trips.

🟠 LEVEL 3 — ADVANCED

Endurance Adventure

These are serious paddling days requiring preparation, fitness, and good judgment.

Typical characteristics:

  • Approximately 15–25 miles
  • Stronger or variable current
  • Multiple obstacles or technical sections
  • Possible difficult portages
  • Limited access points
  • 5–8+ hours of paddling
  • Sustained paddling pace
  • Changing river conditions

Experience: Strong boat control and experience on moving water.

Fitness: Good physical conditioning required.

Best for: Experienced paddlers comfortable spending most of a day on the water.

🔴 LEVEL 4 — EXPEDITION

Serious Adventure

Level 4 trips are designed for experienced paddlers who want a demanding outdoor adventure.

Typical characteristics:

  • 20–30+ miles
  • 8+ hours on the water may be required
  • Strong current or challenging river conditions
  • Numerous or difficult portages
  • Remote stretches of river

Fitness: High.

Preparation: Participants should be fully self-supported and prepared for changing conditions.

Best for: Experienced adventure paddlers looking for a true expedition-style experience.

⚫ LEVEL 5 — EXTREME / EXPEDITION

The Ultimate Challenge

Our highest difficulty rating.

Level 5 adventures are intended for highly experienced paddlers capable of managing long distances, difficult conditions, significant physical demands, and limited margins for error.

Typical characteristics:

  • 25+ miles or exceptionally demanding terrain
  • Very long days
  • Remote or committing sections
  • Significant portaging or hiking
  • Strong, fast, or unpredictable current
  • Challenging weather or exposure
  • Limited access and bailout opportunities

  • Heavy physical and mental demands

Experience: Advanced paddling and wilderness experience required.

Fitness: Excellent physical conditioning required.

Preparation: Extensive preparation and appropriate equipment are essential.

Best for: Highly experienced paddlers seeking the most demanding adventures offered by West Michigan Kayaking Club.

⚠️ WATER DIFFICULTY IS DIFFERENT

Our Trip Difficulty Rating is not the same thing as a whitewater classification.

A 25-mile trip on relatively easy Class I water can still be a Level 4 Expedition because of distance, pace, portages, remoteness, weather, and physical demands.

Likewise, a shorter trip can have a higher water-skill requirement because of rapids or technical river features.

American Canoe Association guidance recognizes that paddling difficulty involves more than simply mileage, with increasingly dynamic environments requiring greater boat control, judgment, and decision-making. (ACA Paddlesports)

Where appropriate, West Michigan Kayaking Club will separately identify river/water conditions and whitewater classification in the event description.

EVERY EVENT WILL SHOW THESE RATINGS

When practical, West Michigan Kayaking Club events will provide:

DISTANCE
How many miles you’ll travel.

DIFFICULTY
Level 1–5 overall trip difficulty.

PACE
Expected paddling pace.

WATER
Calm water, moving water, current, or whitewater.

PORTAGES
None, occasional, frequent, or significant.

DURATION
Estimated time on the water.

EXPERIENCE
Recommended paddling experience.

FITNESS
Physical conditioning required.

REMOTE / ACCESS
How easy it is to reach roads, take-outs, or emergency access.

OVERNIGHT
Whether camping or expedition gear is required.

IMPORTANT: CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE THE RATING

A published difficulty rating is based on expected conditions when the trip is planned.

Actual conditions may increase the difficulty.

High water, low water, strong current, wind, cold temperatures, fallen trees, flooding, weather, damaged river access, difficult portages, or other hazards can cause a trip to become more difficult than originally advertised.

Trip leaders may:

  • Change the route
  • Reduce the distance
  • Add or remove a portage
  • Delay the launch
  • Modify the take-out
  • Cancel the trip
  • Turn around

No itinerary is more important than safety.

CHOOSE THE ADVENTURE THAT FITS YOU

You do not need to be an elite paddler to be part of West Michigan Kayaking Club.

But you do need to choose trips that match your experience, fitness, equipment, and comfort level.

If you’re unsure whether you are ready for a particular adventure, contact the trip leader before attending.

Our goal isn’t simply to put miles on the water.

It’s to explore Michigan’s rivers responsibly, challenge ourselves, build skills, and experience the outdoors together.
