Overview

The Bell River, in Presque Isle County near Alpena, is less than a mile long — it flows from an unnamed lake into False Presque Isle Harbor on Lake Huron. That makes it one of the shortest "rivers" in our guide series, and it is not a meaningful point-to-point paddling trip. We include it for completeness and because the harbor it feeds is genuinely worth paddling: the smart trip here is to launch on the big water and treat the Bell River as a tiny side channel to peek into where it is legal and clear.

Paddling Sections

There are no paddling sections to describe — the river is under a mile long. The paddle that makes sense is False Presque Isle Harbor itself: a sheltered bite of Lake Huron with the Besser Natural Area nearby for a shoreside visit. If you nose into the Bell River's mouth, go only where the channel is clearly open and you are certain of legal access; it may be shallow, weedy, or blocked.

Hazards & Portages

  • Big-water conditions: The harbor opens to Lake Huron; wind and waves can build fast. Stay near shore and watch the sky.
  • Shallow, weedy channel: The Bell River itself may not be boatable at all.
  • Private shoreline: Much of the surrounding shore is private — launch only from public access.

Access & Parking

There is no verified launch on the Bell River itself. Use public access points around False Presque Isle Harbor and the nearby Besser Natural Area, and confirm parking and launching conditions on arrival. The marker below shows the river's mouth (45.25667, -83.41667) as a reference point only.
