Overview

The Charlotte River is a 17.1-mile Upper Peninsula stream in Chippewa County, flowing to the West Neebish Channel of the St. Marys River. It is better known to anglers than to paddlers — the river holds rock bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and steelhead — and research found no established paddling route, no published river miles, and no documented kayak trip. Dunbar Park sits near the river's mouth, and a documented monitoring crossing exists at M-129. This is remote, lightly documented water: go only if you are comfortable scouting on your own and verifying land status first.

Any float would be exploratory: expect a small, possibly obstructed stream through remote country, with limited help nearby if plans go sideways.

  • Remote and undocumented: No trip reports, no liveries, no shuttles. Conditions are unknown until you see them.
  • Land status: Verify public access and ownership before launching; much of the UP is a patchwork of public, tribal, and private land.
  • Cold, dark water: Typical UP stream conditions — dress for immersion and file a float plan.
  • Deadfall: Likely on an unmaintained stream of this size.

Access & Parking

We could not verify a public kayak launch on the Charlotte River. Dunbar Park, adjacent to the river's mouth on the West Neebish Channel, is the researched nearby public site — useful as a base for scouting the mouth area. Confirm access rules locally before launching.
