Charlotte River Kayaking Guide

The Charlotte River is a 17.1-mile river in Dafter and Bruce townships, Chippewa County, in Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula. It flows as a tributary to the St. Marys River, entering the West Neebish Channel — placing it in the far eastern UP, minutes from Sault Ste. Marie.

Important: this is a different, unrelated waterway from the Charlotte River of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. They share nothing but a name — this guide covers only the Chippewa County river in the Upper Peninsula.

There are signs of real paddling interest here: a Sault Ste. Marie–area adventure business, Superior Adventures Outpost, explicitly promotes kayaking the Charlotte River. Paddlers interested in the Charlotte should contact local sources in the Sault Ste. Marie area or go with the outfitter that already runs trips there.

Hazards & Portages

With no documented route, no specific hazard assessment is possible. Lowland UP rivers of this type commonly present strainers and sweepers, beaver dams, and marshy banks, and the lower river near the St. Marys River can be affected by the big river's levels and boat traffic.
