A note on location: despite appearing in this river guide, Michigan’s Duck River — also called Duck Creek — actually lies in Ontonagon County in the western Upper Peninsula, where it is listed among the tributaries of the Ontonagon River system. We include it for completeness, but it is not a Lower Peninsula paddle.

The Duck River is a small, remote, obscure waterway with no established paddling route, no documented public access, and essentially no recreational paddling information available from public sources. That absence of information is itself the guidance: small UP streams like this one are typically narrow, winding, and obstructed by logjams and beaver dams, with access limited to road crossings that may or may not offer legal public entry.

We will not invent a route we cannot verify. If you are determined to explore it, treat the outing as a scouting mission first: study maps and satellite imagery, confirm legal access at any road crossing before you launch, and go with a partner. If you gather reliable ground truth, share it with the club — this guide improves when paddlers report back.

The broader Ontonagon River system does offer established paddling on its larger waters, which are documented in other guides. The Duck is simply too small and too poorly documented to join that list. File this one under “beautiful country, wrong boat” — or bring a partner, a full day, and the understanding that you’re exploring, not following a route.
