Rifle River (Upper Peninsula) Kayaking Guide
An important clarification first: there is no verifiable Upper Peninsula waterway named the Rifle River. We searched the web, Michigan DNR trout-stream publications, USGS-derived stream listings, and comprehensive Michigan basin inventories for a Rifle River in Gogebic, Ontonagon, Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Marquette, Delta, Dickinson, Menominee, and Iron counties. Every result points to a single river — and it is in the Lower Peninsula.
The Rifle River is a 60.3-mile Lower Peninsula river entirely within Ogemaw and Arenac counties. It rises at Devoe Lake in northeastern Ogemaw County, flows southeast as a state-designated natural river, and empties into Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. It is a popular, well-documented canoeing river with no dams or portages on its main paddling reaches, covered by the Michigan DNR ("The Trout Streams of Michigan No. 21: The Rifle River"), USGS gauge 04142000 near Sterling, and many paddling and fishing sources. One 2009 travel-forum thread about the UP mistakenly lists "The Rifle River" among UP paddling rivers, but its description names the Rifle River Recreation Area in Ogemaw County — the Lower Peninsula river, misattributed.
