Mineral River Kayaking Guide

The Mineral River is an 18.7-mile tributary of Lake Superior in western Ontonagon County, rising in the Ottawa National Forest and flowing generally northward to meet the lake about 11 miles west-southwest of Ontonagon. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names settled on "Mineral River" as the stream's name in 1976; older records also call it Beaver Creek.

Paddling documentation is thin to the point of honesty-testing. A real-estate description claims roughly 0.4 mile can be kayaked upstream from the mouth — weak evidence on its own, and parcels near the mouth are partly private, so even that short stretch comes with ownership questions. A Michigan DEQ monitoring site sits off a two-track off M-64 (46.78573, -89.57062), but that is a water-quality reference, not a launch. There is no documented route for the remaining 18-plus miles.

This guide therefore describes, at most, a short mouth-area paddle — and even that should be treated as conditional on verifying access. Do not present the Mineral River as an 18.7-mile paddling destination; the river's length is a geography fact, not a route.

Paddling the Mineral River

One property description claims about four-tenths of a mile of the river can be kayaked upstream from where it meets Lake Superior. That is the full extent of the paddling evidence, and it is thin — treat it as a possibility to verify, not a route to count on. The mouth reference point is about 46.83550, -89.54821.

Upstream (undocumented)

The river rises in the Ottawa National Forest and runs 18.7 miles to the lake, but no put-in, take-out, portage, or flow information is documented for any of it. Expect a small, brushy forest stream outside of high water.

Hazards & Portages

Private property near the mouth is the first concern — verify ownership before launching or landing. Lake Superior surf and cold water apply at the river's mouth. Upstream, assume undocumented strainers, beaver dams, and shallow stretches. There are no documented portages because there is no documented route.

Access & Parking

No verified public launch exists for the Mineral River. The DEQ's two-track-off-M-64 monitoring location is not a launch. If you explore the mouth area, confirm legal access first — nearby shoreline is partly private.
