Rapid River Kayaking Guide

Not to be confused with the longer Rapid River of Delta and Marquette counties, the Ontonagon County Rapid River is a short, steep stream of about 4.5 miles in Bergland Township. It rises at approximately 46.61417, -89.71500 and flows east into the Big Iron River at approximately 46.63222, -89.65083.

Rapid River Falls interrupts the stream along its short course — and that fact, combined with the river's brevity and gradient, tells the paddling story. This is a small waterfall creek in forested hill country, not a floatable river. No paddling route is documented, and none should be inferred: short, steep UP streams like this one are typically a staircase of drops, boulder gardens, and deadfall.

The surrounding country is classic western UP forest, a mix of public and private timberland. Anglers and waterfall hunters may find it interesting; paddlers should look to the area's larger rivers instead.

The stream ends at the Big Iron River, itself a remote northwoods river. Neither the confluence area nor any access there is documented for paddlers.
