Sante River Kayaking Guide

The Sante River is an 8.7-mile stream in Houghton County's Tapiola district, in the heart of the Keweenaw Peninsula's southern copper country. Its waters travel a long road to the big lake: via the North Branch Otter River, the Otter River, the Sturgeon River, and the Portage River to Lake Superior.

The river's known landmark is Paul's Falls, where the gently flowing stream drops into a sandstone bowl and over a steep, rocky slope — a 10-foot biggest drop in two pitches. It is famously one of the most remote waterfall hikes in the Keweenaw, about a six-mile round trip over logging roads and deer trails from the A70 east of M-26 in Toivola. A waterfall like that on an 8.7-mile stream tells paddlers what they need to know: this is a small headwater creek, not a floatable river.
