River History
The Bass River is a 3.6-mile stream that drains into the lower Grand River between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. This stretch of the Grand was a busy lumber and river-landing corridor in the 1800s, when logs and goods moved downstream to the port at Grand Haven.
The State of Michigan acquired the land around the river mouth in 1994, creating the 1,665-acre Bass River State Recreation Area, with about 3.5 miles of Grand River frontage and the 300-acre Max Lake. It is one of the closest wild paddling areas to Grand Rapids.

Paddling Character
The Bass is a short exploration paddle best combined with Max Lake and the Grand River. It suits newer paddlers on calm days and makes a good after-work outing from Grand Rapids.

Not a designated state water trail. Check michiganwatertrails.org for any Grand River water trail listings that include the recreation area access sites.
Dams & Portages
No dams on the Bass River.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

River-Specific Concerns
Cross the Grand River at right angles and watch for powerboats. Wind can build on Max Lake. Hunting is allowed in the recreation area, so wear orange in fall.
