Overview

The Bass River is a small Grand River tributary in Ottawa County, west of Grand Rapids. Public information about paddling the Bass River itself is thin: research turns up road crossings at Warner Street and Buchanan Street but no documented kayak route, no established launch, and no published mileage. What the Bass River corridor does offer paddlers is excellent access to the Grand River — Bass River Recreation Area sits right on the Grand and carries an unimproved boat launch, and nearby Deer Creek Park has a small-boat and canoe launch.

So this guide takes the practical view: the Bass River proper is an un-documented scouting stream, but the Bass River area is a genuinely useful Grand River paddling base. Do not confuse the Grand River launch at Bass River Recreation Area with a Bass River launch — they are different waters.

The paddling that actually happens here is on the Grand River: launch at the unimproved launch in Bass River Recreation Area or at Deer Creek Park's small-boat launch and float the Grand's broad, mostly gentle reaches. Warner Street and Buchanan Street cross the Bass River itself and can be used to look at the stream, but launching a kayak there is exploratory at best — expect a narrow, possibly obstructed channel and confirm legal access before you go.

Unknown obstructions: The Bass River's condition is un-documented; expect logjams, fences, and shallow stretches.
Grand River current: The Grand looks lazy but moves; know your take-out and respect rising water after rain.
Unimproved launches: The Bass River Recreation Area launch is unimproved — muddy banks and no dock.
Private land: Much of the Bass River corridor is private. Stay on public land and rights-of-way.

Bass River Recreation Area (marker below) is the key site: state-managed, with parking and an unimproved launch onto the Grand River — not the Bass River. Deer Creek Park, run by Ottawa County, offers a small-boat and canoe launch in the same general area. Both are day-use parks; check current hours and any vehicle fees before you go.
