Belle River Kayaking Guide

Overview

The Belle River winds 73.5 miles through Michigan's Thumb region before emptying into the St. Clair River near Marine City. Paddlers should know the river's split personality: its headwaters are frequently straightened agricultural drains with little to offer a kayak, while the lower river near Marine City is calm, wide flatwater that makes for a genuinely pleasant paddle. If you paddle the Belle, paddle the lower end.

Paddling Sections

Lower Belle River: Belle River Launch to the St. Clair River. This is the trip. Launch at the Belle River Launch on Belle River Road in East China and paddle the calm lower river downstream to its mouth at the St. Clair River near Marine City. Expect slow, wide water with riverside homes and marinas — easy paddling with a big-river payoff at the end. Turn around at the mouth or arrange a take-out; the St. Clair River itself is a separate, much bigger proposition.

Upper Belle River. Not recommended for paddling. The upper watershed is dominated by channelized agricultural drains — straight, shallow, and uninviting.

Hazards & Portages

  • Boat traffic near the mouth: Marinas and motorboats cluster near Marine City; stay visible and to the side of channels.
  • Wind: The widened lower river and the St. Clair River mouth catch wind — check the forecast.
  • No portages: The lower river has no dams or rapids on the paddled reach.

Access & Parking

Belle River Launch at 1956 Belle River Road, East China (42.738386, -82.496252; marker below) is the researched public launch for the lower river. Confirm hours and any launch fees on arrival, and be considerate of neighboring marina operations near the mouth.
