River History
The Belle River rises in the marshes of Dryden Township near the Lapeer–Oakland county line and winds east through Imlay City and Memphis to the St. Clair River. Its French name reflects the 1700s, when French traders and settlers worked the St. Clair River shoreline between Lake Huron and Detroit.
The river's mouth is in Marine City, a town that grew up building wooden ships and lake schooners in the 1800s. Its shipbuilding past still shows in the old riverfront homes and the city's name. Today the lower river is part of the Blueways of St. Clair water trail system as the Belle River Route, a 14.5-mile easy paddle from China Township to the St. Clair River.

Headwaters
A marshy area in southern Dryden Township near the Lapeer–Oakland county line. The North Branch rises from Long Lake in Attica Township, Lapeer County.

Sections
Headwaters to Memphis: Small farm-country river and drains; not part of the water trail.
China Township Park to Springborn Road: Northern part of the Belle River Route, with significant woody debris near King Road.
Springborn Road to Marine City: The section near Marine City is largely free of woody debris and widens toward the St. Clair River.

Paddling Character
The Belle River Route is rated easy. Expect wooded banks and some debris in the northern miles, then a wider, cleaner river through East China Township to Marine City. The finish is on the St. Clair River, which is big water with a strong current, wind and commercial ship traffic.

Dams & Portages
No dams are listed on the Belle River Route. Scout new water upstream before paddling it.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

River-Specific Concerns
Logs near King Road can block the channel at times. At the mouth, the St. Clair River runs fast and carries Great Lakes freighters, so stay close to shore and cross only where necessary.
