Before you launch: The lower river is a busy harbor with marinas, boat traffic and the Lake Michigan channel at the South Pier. Stay out of the channel when the lake is rough. Check the gage, weather and advisories the day of your trip.

River History

The Black River takes its name from its dark brown water, colored by sediment and organic material from the swamps and farmland it drains. Its North, Middle and South branches gather water from Allegan and Van Buren counties before joining to form a short main stem that reaches Lake Michigan at South Haven.

South Haven grew around the harbor at the river mouth, shipping lumber and fruit across the lake in the 1800s. The South Pier Lighthouse still guards the entrance, and the Michigan Maritime Museum sits on the riverfront. Today South Haven is a designated Trail Town with miles of kayak and canoe routes on the Black River.
