River History
The Carp Lake River drains Lake Paradise, historically called Carp Lake, a 1,900-acre lake beside the village of Carp Lake. It runs about 10.5 miles north and west through Emmet County forest to Lake Michigan, about five miles west of the Straits of Mackinac.
The river is ecologically important despite its size. A 1997 study found the endangered Hungerford's crawling water beetle near the Oliver Road crossing, but erosion at the road seems to have damaged the habitat, and a 2003 survey found none. The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council notes it has little to no data on this watershed, so club trip reports would add real knowledge.

Paddling Character
The Carp Lake River is best treated as an exploratory paddle for experienced members. Plan a short, scouted run, bring a saw, and report back what you find. Lake Paradise itself is an easy alternative for a relaxed paddle.

Best Conditions

Michigan Water Trails
Not a designated state water trail. The Lake Michigan shore near the mouth may be part of the Lake Michigan Water Trail.
Dams & Portages
No dams are documented on the Carp Lake River. Check for a lake-level structure at the Lake Paradise outlet.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.
