Overview

The Clam River begins at Lake Cadillac in the city of Cadillac and runs 51.1 miles west as a tributary of the Muskegon River. It is the rare Michigan river whose very source sits in a downtown: the river's headwaters are accessible right beside the Sound Garden and the Clam River Greenway trail in Cadillac, making the put-in area one of the most urban river sources in the state. One important clarification: the nearby Clam Lake Canal is a different waterway — don't confuse the two when planning.

Paddling Sections

Lake Cadillac source area. The researched and accessible water. Put in near the Sound Garden and Clam River Greenway in Cadillac and explore the river's first miles as it leaves the lake. This is pleasant, easy urban paddling with the Greenway trail alongside — a good outing for beginners and families.

Downstream of Cadillac. The river runs another 40-plus miles to the Muskegon, but we found no documented launches, take-outs, or trip mileage for these reaches. Treat anything beyond the headwaters as exploratory scouting: expect a small winding stream with deadfall and uncertain access.

Hazards & Portages

  • Urban infrastructure: Low bridges, culverts, and riverside development near Cadillac — scout before you float.
  • Strainers: Deadfall is likely, especially downstream of town; never paddle through a strainer.
  • Lake Cadillac wind: The lake at the river's source can be rough; stay in the river if conditions look sporty.
  • Not the canal: The Clam Lake Canal is a separate waterway — confirm you are on the Clam River itself.
