Clinton River Kayaking Guide
The Clinton River is metro Detroit's paddling river — a state-designated water trail with about 72 paddleable miles and 23 public launches winding through Oakland and Macomb counties on its way to Lake St. Clair. Few Michigan rivers offer this much variety in one watershed. The upper reaches and lake chains are calm and family-friendly, the middle river between Auburn Hills and Utica serves up genuine rapids and quick technical water, and the lower river settles into a gentler urban paddle toward the big lake.
That variety means the Clinton can match almost any skill level, as long as you pick the right reach. Beginners and families do best on the calmer upper sections or the lower river, where the current is modest and the scenery is all riverside parks and neighborhoods. Intermediate and advanced paddlers head for the Auburn Hills-to-Utica corridor, where the gradient picks up and the river demands real maneuvering — this is the closest thing to whitewater in the metro area, and it deserves respect, especially at higher flows.
Because it flows through one of Michigan's most populated regions, the Clinton is also a river of easy logistics: launches are plentiful, parking is rarely an issue, and you are never far from food or a shuttle vehicle. The trade-off is that the river responds fast to urban runoff — after heavy rain, levels rise quickly and new strainers can appear overnight. Check conditions before every trip, and treat the river as a different, pushier stream after storms.

Paddling the Clinton
Riverside Park to Eagles Landing via River Woods Park
The upper-middle river strings together short, easy hops: Riverside Park to River Woods Park is just half a mile, River Woods Park to Eagles Landing is 6.9 miles, and Eagles Landing to Rochester Landing is 3.1 miles. This is pleasant, mostly gentle paddling through parkland — a great area for newer paddlers and relaxed group floats.
Rochester Landing to Downtown Utica
Things get livelier downstream: Rochester Landing to Yates Cider Mill (2 miles), Yates to the River Bends/Ryan Road area (2.4 miles), and River Bends to downtown Utica (3.3 miles). This corridor includes the river's most technical water, with rapids and quick maneuvering through the Auburn Hills–Utica reach. Scout what you cannot see, and save this section for paddlers with solid moving-water skills.
North Clinton River Park to Budd Park (9.6 miles)
On the lower river, the 9.6-mile run from North Clinton River Park to Budd Park offers a longer, mellower trip as the river meanders toward Lake St. Clair. The current eases, the channel widens, and the paddling becomes a relaxed urban nature tour — but stay alert near the mouth, where wind and waves off Lake St. Clair can build quickly.
Hazards & Portages
The Clinton's hazards shift with the weather. After storms, expect fallen trees and new strainers, undercut holes, and pushy current — particularly in the rapids reach. Rocks and shallow ledges appear at lower flows. On the lower river, wind-driven waves from Lake St. Clair can make the last miles surprisingly challenging for small craft. There are no major dams on the described paddling reaches, but always confirm portage needs on your chosen section before launching, and never paddle the rapids reach alone at high water.
Access & Parking
With 23 public launches, access is excellent. North Clinton River Park (42.60773, -83.02445) anchors the lower river, while Riverside Park, River Woods Park, Eagles Landing, Rochester Landing, Yates Cider Mill, River Bends, Budd Park, and the downtown Utica launches serve the middle reaches. Most sites have dedicated parking and are designed for carry-in launching. On summer weekends the popular launches fill up — have a backup put-in in mind.
