River History
The Anishinaabe called the river Meguzee, after their name for the bald eagle. Euro-American settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and in 1858 elk antlers were found in the rapids, so the river, rapids and lake were renamed for the elk. Elk Lake itself is a former arm of Lake Michigan, cut off by sediment as lake levels dropped, leaving the short Elk River to drain it.
The Elk River is the final outlet of the Elk River Chain of Lakes, a string of 12 lakes and connecting rivers that drain through Torch Lake, Lake Skegemog and Elk Lake into East Grand Traverse Bay. A hydroelectric dam now quiets the old rapids in Elk Rapids, and the river below forms the village harbor.

Paddling Character
The Elk River is a short connector, not a destination on its own. Pair it with an Elk Lake paddle or the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, or explore the Elk Rapids harbor and shoreline on calm days.

Michigan Water Trails
Part of the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, a state-designated water trail of more than 100 miles across 12 lakes and connecting rivers, hosted by Paddle Antrim. Elk River Rotary Park in Elk Rapids is an alternate access on the Elk Lake and Lower Chain routes.

Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

River-Specific Concerns
Stay well away from the dam intake and spillway. Elk Lake and Grand Traverse Bay can build big waves fast, and the water stays cold.
