River History
The Galien River is named for René Bréhant de Galinée, a French missionary, mapmaker and explorer of the Great Lakes. The spelling was changed to Galien by legislative action in 1829. The river rises at the outlet of Dayton Lake east of Galien and flows through Berrien County farm country to Lake Michigan at New Buffalo.
Much of the watershed was dredged and channelized for agriculture, but the river still passes through Warren Woods State Park, home to what is described as the last climax beech-maple forest in Michigan, and the watershed supports the state's largest breeding population of yellow-throated warblers. Near the mouth, the Galien River Marsh Water Trail and Galien River County Park's elevated marsh walk show off a rich coastal wetland.

Paddling Character
The Galien River Marsh Water Trail is a gentle 1- to 2-hour paddle through a coastal marsh, slow enough to paddle upstream and back. It is one of the easiest and most scenic short paddles in Southwest Michigan, with good birding and a harbor finish at New Buffalo.

Galien River Marsh Water Trail, a designated water trail from the DNR launch on Red Arrow Highway to the City of New Buffalo launch. Trail maps are posted at Red Arrow Landing and the City Boat Launch.
Dams & Portages
No dams are documented on the Galien River.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

The marsh is easy water. The risk is at the finish: powerboats in the New Buffalo harbor and waves at the Lake Michigan channel.
