River History
The Gun River drains Gun Lake on the Allegan–Barry county line and runs about 15 miles southwest through Allegan County farm country to the Kalamazoo River just east of Otsego. Gun Lake itself, with Yankee Springs Recreation Area on its shore, is one of the best-known lakes in West Michigan.
Like many southwest Michigan streams, the Gun River valley was settled for farming in the 1800s, and much of its course runs through agricultural land. The river ends in the Kalamazoo River corridor, where the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council promotes paddling on the main river below Otsego.

Treat the Gun River as an exploratory paddle. A better-known nearby option is Gun Lake itself, or the Kalamazoo River below Otsego, where the main river has established access.

Michigan Water Trails
Not a designated state water trail. The Kalamazoo River Watershed Council promotes a water trail on the Kalamazoo River and some tributaries. Check whether the Gun River is included.
Dams & Portages
Check for a lake-level structure at the Gun Lake outlet. No other dams are documented.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.
