Before you launch: The Indian River is a busy boating channel in the middle of the Inland Waterway. Expect heavy powerboat and pontoon traffic in summer, and wind on Burt Lake and Mullett Lake at either end. Check the gage, weather and advisories the day of your trip.

River History

The Indian River is the short connector between Burt Lake and Mullett Lake, at the heart of the Inland Waterway. Native Americans and later fur trappers used this chain of rivers and lakes to cross northern Michigan without paddling around the Straits of Mackinac, and the community of Indian River takes its name from the river.

Today the town of Indian River is a hub for boating and paddling on the Inland Waterway, the Sturgeon River and the surrounding lakes. The North Central State Trail crosses the river in town, so it is easy to combine a paddle with a bike ride.
