River History
The Lincoln River forms where its North and South branches meet in Victory Township, about five miles northeast of Ludington, and runs through 160-acre Lincoln Lake to Lake Michigan at Epworth Heights. Lumbering firms reshaped its waterways in the 1800s, and in the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps dug drainage ditches across the watershed to help farming.
In June 2008 a storm dropped about 11 inches of rain in a few hours, flooding the Lincoln River system and damaging roads in roughly 200 places. The watershed is dotted with small lakes, including Hackert, Round, Cartier and Lincoln lakes, and the South Branch flows through the West Shore Community College campus.

Paddling Character
Lincoln Lake is the easiest place to paddle in this watershed. The river above it is small and best treated as exploratory, and the outlet to Lake Michigan passes private land at Epworth Heights.

Not a designated state water trail. The Lake Michigan shore near Ludington is part of the Lake Michigan Water Trail.
Dams & Portages
No dams are documented on the Lincoln River.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

River-Specific Concerns
Respect the private community at the mouth. Do not paddle out into Lake Michigan in waves. Upstream, the river can rise fast after heavy rain.
