Little Muskegon River

The Little Muskegon River is a tributary of the Muskegon River in Mecosta County, flowing through the Morley area — where the White Pine Trail crosses it — and continuing downstream toward the Muskegon River’s impounded reach in the Hardy Dam and Croton Dam corridor. A regional paddling map references several access names along it, including 37 North, Mill Iron Road End, Parsley’s, and the 82 Sport Shop Drive Bridge, but the map’s ordering is unclear and no reliable mileages can be assigned to stretches between them.

That puts the Little Muskegon in the “promising but unverified” category. It is a real, paddle-sized stream in a region full of paddling infrastructure — the White Pine Trail, the Muskegon River water trail, and the big impoundments all nearby — but public sources don’t yet support a described point-to-point kayak route with confirmed distances.

The practical approach is to treat it as exploratory water: use the documented crossings as reference points, scout from the White Pine Trail bridge at Morley (shown above), and piece together short out-and-back floats rather than assuming a through-trip.

Morley area out-and-back (distance of your choosing): The White Pine Trail bridge crossing at Morley is the best-documented reference point on the river. Paddle upstream or downstream from a legal access point and return to your put-in — an out-and-back avoids the shuttle problem entirely on unverified water.

Downstream toward the Hardy/Croton corridor: Regional maps show the river continuing toward the Muskegon River impoundments, with named references like 37 North, Mill Iron Road End, Parsley’s, and the 82 Sport Shop Drive Bridge. We could not verify public access status or distances between these points, so don’t plan a through-trip on them without ground-truthing first.

Hazards & Portages

• Unverified obstructions: Logjams, strainers, and possible fences or old dams — scout from shore and be ready to turn around.
• Access uncertainty: Named map references are not confirmed public launches. Verify legal access before launching anywhere.
• Changing character downstream: The lower river approaches big impounded water with different hazards (wind, boat traffic) than the small stream above.
