River History
Before Dutch settlers founded Holland in 1847, the Ottawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi, together the Council of Three Fires, lived along this river. Its Ottawa name, roughly "mak-a-tew-gamie," means "black water," and settlers recorded it in about 25 spellings before "Macatawa" stuck. The river is also known as the Black River.
The Macatawa drains a 174-square-mile, largely agricultural watershed through Zeeland and Holland into Lake Macatawa, which connects to Lake Michigan. Ottawa County, Holland Township and Park Township now protect land along the lower river as a greenway, and the marsh near downtown Holland makes an easy, all-ages paddle.

Paddling Character
The lower Macatawa is a short beginner river and marsh paddle close to downtown Holland. A loop from Window on the Waterfront around Windmill Island takes about two hours, and continuing out Lake Macatawa toward the Lake Michigan piers is bigger water for experienced paddlers.

Best Conditions
Calm mornings; take out before the open lake on windy days.
Michigan Water Trails
Not a designated state water trail. County and city parks along the Macatawa Greenway provide canoe- and kayak-friendly launches.
Dams & Portages
No dams on the paddled lower river.
Never paddle near a dam face or spillway. Take out well upstream and confirm portage access before the trip.

River-Specific Concerns
Lake Macatawa catches westerly wind and has heavy boat traffic in summer. Use Window on the Waterfront as a sheltered take-out on windy days, and don't head toward the Lake Michigan piers in waves.
