Macatawa River

The Macatawa River winds through Ottawa County — past Zeeland and Holland — before widening into Lake Macatawa, the drowned river mouth that connects to Lake Michigan. It is classic west-Michigan lowland paddling country: slow water, floodplain forest, and a direct connection to big-water playgrounds.

The most practical paddling is on the lower river and the lake. The Lake Macatawa Public Access boat launch off Ottawa Beach Road (42.79093, -86.186532) puts you on broad, sheltered flatwater with room to roam — an easy outing for beginners, families, and anyone who wants a relaxed paddle with views of the Holland shoreline.

Upstream, the Upper Macatawa Natural Area — with trailheads at 84th and 76th avenues, parking, and floodplain overlooks — is a gem for hiking and wildlife watching, but we could not verify a paddling launch there. Keep the two experiences separate in your planning: hike the natural area, paddle the lower river and lake.

Paddling Sections

Lower Macatawa River and Lake Macatawa (out-and-back, distance of your choosing): Launch at the Lake Macatawa Public Access off Ottawa Beach Road and paddle the broad lower river and lake. This is sheltered flatwater — go as far as you like and return to the launch. Watch for motorboat traffic on summer weekends and stay clear of the channel to Lake Michigan unless you’re prepared for big water.

Upper river: No verified paddling launch was found in the Upper Macatawa Natural Area or elsewhere upstream. Don’t assume put-in access at road crossings — much of the upper river flows through private land.

Hazards & Portages

• Motorboat traffic: Lake Macatawa is a busy recreational lake in summer — stay visible and keep to the edges.
• Wind on the lake: The broad lower lake can chop up quickly when wind opposes the shoreline — check the forecast and stay near shore.
• Lake Michigan connection: The channel to the big lake is for experienced paddlers in settled conditions only.
• Unverified upstream access: Don’t launch upstream without confirming legal public access first.

Lake Macatawa Public Access (Ottawa Beach Road; 42.79093, -86.186532): The documented public boat launch for the lower river and lake. Parking is shared with other lake users — arrive early on summer weekends.

Upper Macatawa Natural Area (trailheads at 84th and 76th avenues): Excellent for hiking and floodplain views, with parking — but no verified paddling launch. Enjoy it on foot.
