Michigamme River Kayaking Guide
The Michigamme River runs about 67 miles through the western Upper Peninsula — from the Michigamme area through Marquette and Iron counties to its confluence with the Menominee River — and it is a working river, not a wilderness float stream. Several dams, including the Michigamme Falls Dam, control its flow, and USGS and Michigan DEQ monitoring stations mark its length: near Witbeck, at Republic, at the M-95 crossing, and at Whitbeck Rapids Road, among others.
A launch is reported near M-95 and LLK Road around Republic, which puts paddlers on one of the river's freer-flowing reaches. But no adequately documented paddle segment — with named rapids, reliable mileage, and a confirmed put-in/take-out pair — could be verified for this guide. That gap matters more than usual here: dam-controlled rivers change character abruptly with releases, and portaging around dams is not a casual undertaking.
So this guide is deliberately conservative. The Michigamme may hold real paddling — locals certainly fish and float parts of it — but we will not describe a route we cannot document. If you paddle it, you are in exploratory mode on a dam-controlled river, and you should plan accordingly.

Paddling the Michigamme River
The dam-controlled character
Dams divide the Michigamme into separate reaches with very different personalities, and releases can raise the river quickly. Any trip has to be planned dam-to-dam, with confirmed portages — and we could not confirm a full set of portage details for any reach.
The Republic-area launch
A launch near M-95 and LLK Road around Republic is reported in local references, and DEQ monitoring stations at M-95 (46.33948, -87.97314) and at Republic (46.38411, -87.98013) confirm the river's presence there. But a reported launch is not a verified public launch with parking and a documented downstream take-out, so treat it as a lead to investigate, not a turn-by-turn itinerary.
Hazards & Portages
Dams are the defining hazard: several impound the river, and approaching one from upstream without a known portage is dangerous. Releases can change flow with little warning. The free-flowing reaches likely hold the usual strainers and sweepers of a forested UP river. Verify every portage on foot before committing to a reach.
Access & Parking
A launch near M-95 and LLK Road around Republic is reported but not verified here as a formal public launch. Confirm ownership, parking, and downstream take-out options locally before counting on it — monitoring-station coordinates are water-quality references, not launches.
