The Pinconning River reaches Saginaw Bay through low coastal marsh country near the city of Pinconning, and that mouth is the whole story for paddlers. A Bay County map of Pinconning County Park shows a boat launch at or near the river's mouth, plus a second launch directly on Saginaw Bay and observation towers and platforms — so the park is clearly the place to start.

We found no defensible upstream route or segment mileage for this river, so this guide is honest about its scope: launch at Pinconning County Park and paddle the lower river as an out-and-back, exploring upstream into the marshy channel as far as water and downed timber allow, then drifting back to the ramp. On calm days you can also nose out toward the bay mouth for the view — but the bay is the bay, and it makes its own weather.

This is a wildlife paddle as much as a paddling paddle: marsh birds, muskrats, and big Saginaw Bay skies. Keep in mind that nearby state game lands mean hunting seasons bring extra boat traffic and orange-clad visitors to the marsh — check the calendar, wear bright colors, and give hunters space.

Pinconning County Park to the Lower River — out-and-back

Launch at the park's river-mouth ramp and paddle upstream into the marsh channel. Go as far as open water and clear passage allow, then return to the ramp. Distances are yours to choose; there is no documented mileage, so set a turnaround time instead of a turnaround point.

The Bay Mouth

On calm, windless days the mouth where the river meets Saginaw Bay is a worthy destination. Treat it as conditional: if whitecaps or a building breeze show up, stay in the river channel.

Hazards & Portages

• Wind and waves on Saginaw Bay — the single biggest hazard; check the marine forecast and stay in the river if in doubt.
• Shallow marsh water — expect soft bottom and occasional dragging.
• Submerged debris — old pilings and timber hide in the channel near the mouth.
• Hunting season — nearby state game lands mean hunters and extra traffic in fall; wear bright colors.
