A short Thumb river that winds through farm country to the village of Sebewaing and out to the marshes and islands of Saginaw Bay. The paddle from Sebewaing's harbor down to the bay is the highlight, with great birding in the coastal wetlands.

Before you launch: shallow bay and wind
- Saginaw Bay is shallow: the water near Sebewaing is shallow for a long way out, and waves build fast in wind.
- Wind changes the depth: strong wind can raise or lower water levels at the mouth by a foot or more.
- Hunting season: the coastal marshes are popular for waterfowl hunting in fall. Wear bright colors.
- Boat traffic: watch for fishing boats in the harbor and channel.
River History
Sebewaing grew from a Lutheran mission founded among the Ojibwe by German missionaries in the 1840s. The name is often translated as "crooked creek." German farmers followed, draining the wet lowlands for farms, and the village became a market town and fishing port on Saginaw Bay.
In the early 1900s, Sebewaing became a sugar beet town when a sugar factory opened by the river. Sugar beets are still a big part of the Thumb's farm economy, and the village celebrates with its annual Michigan Sugar Festival. Today the harbor is home to fishing and pleasure boats.

The Sebewaing River drains flat farmland in Huron and Tuscola counties and flows northwest through the village of Sebewaing to Saginaw Bay. Most of the upper river is a straightened farm drain. The lower river through the village is deeper, with the harbor marina near the mouth.

The USGS gage at Center Street in Sebewaing is right on the paddling stretch. Near the bay, wind and Saginaw Bay water levels matter more than river flow.
How to read it
Compare the reading with the typical level for the date. After big storms, the river runs higher and muddier.
Check the wind. A southwest wind pushes water out of the bay and can leave the mouth shallow, and a northeast wind pushes it in.

Michigan Water Trails
As far as we could find, the Sebewaing River is not a designated Michigan Water Trail. The Saginaw Bay Blueways cover the western and southern shores of the bay, and the Thumb's Lake Huron shoreline has its own heritage water trail farther north.

Wildlife & Fishing
Wildlife
The Saginaw Bay marshes near Sebewaing are some of the best waterfowl habitat in Michigan. Look for egrets, herons, terns, pelicans in late summer and huge flocks of ducks and geese in migration.
Fishing
Sebewaing is known for perch and walleye on Saginaw Bay, and pike and bass in the marshes. Ice fishing is popular in winter.

- Stay near shore and watch for shallows.
- Wear bright colors during waterfowl season.
Rules, passes and private land
- State wildlife areas along the bay have their own rules, including no camping.
- A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed at state parks and many state-run launches.
- Much of the riverbank is private. Stop only on public land or where you have permission.
- Leave No Trace: pack out all trash.

From Grand Rapids, Sebewaing is about two and a half hours east. Take I-96 and I-69 toward Flint, or US-10 and I-75 to Bay City, then follow M-25 north along the bay.
Trip Planning
Harbor to bay
Launch at the harbor marina and paddle out the river to the bay marshes and back.
Birding trip
Plan an early-morning paddle in spring or fall for the best birding.
Combine
Pair Sebewaing with the Pigeon River at Caseville and the Pinnebog at Port Crescent for a Thumb weekend.

Look at the gage, the marine forecast and hunting seasons.
River Difficulty
We use the American Whitewater difficulty scale. American Whitewater doesn't list the Sebewaing River, so it's rated Class I: easy water with no rapids. Wind on Saginaw Bay can make the mouth much harder.
