A short salmon stream near Rogers City that runs through Swan Lake and past the giant Calcite limestone quarry to Lake Huron. It's too small to paddle for most of its length, so this guide focuses on what's around it: the Lake Huron shoreline, the Rogers City Blueway and the fall salmon run.

Before you go: small water and an active quarry
- Not a paddling river: the Swan is a small, unnavigable stream for most of its length. Don't plan a river trip on it.
- Quarry land: the Calcite quarry near the mouth is an active industrial site. Stay off posted quarry property and away from the shipping docks.
- Fall salmon run: the river is managed for salmon. Expect fishing rules and closures near the weir in fall.
- Lake Huron: if you paddle the shoreline instead, check the marine forecast. Waves build fast in onshore wind.
River History
The Swan River runs through the heart of Rogers City's limestone country. In the early 1900s, the Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company opened the Calcite quarry just northwest of where the river enters Swan Lake. It grew into one of the largest limestone quarries in the world, and freighters still load stone at its harbor for steel mills and cement plants around the Great Lakes.
Rogers City became a Great Lakes shipping town, home port to many of the freighters that carried that stone. The Swan River became part of the state's salmon program. The DNR stocks chinook salmon in the river every year, and in the 1980s it was also stocked with coho salmon and lake trout.

River Overview
The Swan River starts in a swamp south of Belknap and east of Hawks in Presque Isle County. It flows about 17 miles northeast, enters the small Swan Lake, then continues to Lake Huron in a small bay between Adams Point and Quarry Point, just east of Rogers City.

USGS Flow & Water Conditions
There's no live USGS gage on the Swan River. The Pigeon River near Vanderbilt is the closest live gage in the northern Lower Peninsula and a rough guide to whether local streams are high or low. For Lake Huron trips, the marine forecast matters far more.
How to read it
Northern streams rise with spring snowmelt and heavy rain. In fall, salmon move up the Swan when cooler weather and rain raise the water.

The DNR manages the Swan for salmon and runs a weir on the lower river in fall. Stay clear of it and follow posted rules.

There are no paddling launches on the Swan River itself. These are Lake Huron access points near Rogers City. Confirm parking and current conditions before you go.

Wildlife
The northern forest around the Swan holds deer, black bear, otter and grouse. Eagles, loons and mergansers work the Lake Huron shoreline.
Fishing
The Swan is stocked with chinook salmon every year, and the fall run draws anglers. Lake Huron off Rogers City is known for salmon and lake trout. Check the current fishing guide for river rules.

- Wear your PFD the whole time on Lake Huron.
- Check the marine forecast before any shoreline paddle.
- Stay off posted quarry land and away from loading docks.
- Give salmon anglers and the weir plenty of room.
Rules, passes and private land
- A Recreation Passport is required at P.H. Hoeft State Park.
- A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed at state parks and many state-run launches.
- Much of the riverbank is private. Stop only on public land or where you have permission.
- Leave No Trace: pack out all trash.

The best time for Lake Huron shoreline paddling on calm days.

Salmon run in the river. Cooler, windier on the lake.

Ice and cold. Not recommended.
From Grand Rapids, Rogers City is about four hours north. Take US-131 north to Gaylord, then M-32 east and M-68 or M-23 to Rogers City.

Watch the run
Visit in fall to see salmon moving up the Swan.
Combine rivers
The Ocqueoc, Black and Rainy rivers are all within an hour.
Check before you go
Look at the marine forecast and any DNR notices about the salmon weir.
River Difficulty
We use the American Whitewater difficulty scale. American Whitewater doesn't list the Swan River, which isn't navigable for most of its length. The nearby Lake Huron shoreline is easy in calm weather and hard in wind.
