Join the West Michigan Kayaking Club for an active paddling adventure as we explore the beautiful Shiawassee River from Byron to SHIATown Park along the Shiawassee National Heritage Water Trail.
This scenic stretch of river offers everything we love about Michigan paddling—winding channels, peaceful natural surroundings, abundant wildlife, and the opportunity to experience one of Mid-Michigan’s hidden gems from the seat of a kayak.
Whether you’re looking to explore new waterways, build your paddling experience, or spend a day outside with a great group of people, this is a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy Michigan’s incredible rivers.
A True River Adventure
This trip covers approximately 18–19 miles of moving water and is designed as an active paddle, not a leisurely float.
Participants should be prepared for several hours on the water while maintaining a steady pace. We’ll enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and peaceful sections of the river while working together as a group to complete this exciting route.

Safety First
At West Michigan Kayaking Club, safety is always our priority.
PFDs (life jackets) are required and must be worn at all times while on the water. Participants should be comfortable paddling several miles and maintaining an active pace throughout the trip.
All West Michigan Kayaking Club events are drug- and alcohol-free while on the water. This policy helps ensure a safe, respectful, and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Self-Supported Adventure
All West Michigan Kayaking Club events are self-supported adventures. Participants are responsible for their own transportation, equipment, preparation, and personal safety while participating.
By attending, participants acknowledge that kayaking and canoeing involve inherent risks and agree to participate responsibly.
