The Legend Begins

In the world of expedition kayaking, few names are as legendary as Piotr Chmielinski.

In 1985–1986, the Polish-born explorer became the first person to successfully kayak the entire length of the Amazon River—from its source high in the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. Covering more than 4,000 miles, his journey through some of the world's most remote and dangerous waterways remains one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of paddlesports.

Long before GPS, satellite imagery, or emergency communication devices became standard equipment, Chmielinski relied on careful planning, traditional navigation, teamwork, and remarkable determination to reach the sea.

The Ultimate Expedition

The Amazon River is unlike any other river on Earth.

Its headwaters begin as icy mountain streams before plunging through steep whitewater canyons and eventually expanding into the largest river system on the planet. Along the way, paddlers encounter powerful rapids, relentless tropical storms, dangerous wildlife, disease, crushing humidity, and weeks of complete isolation.

During the international expedition, Chmielinski was the only member of the team to complete the entire journey on the river, successfully navigating every section from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean.

His accomplishment earned worldwide recognition and cemented his place among the greatest expedition paddlers in history.

More Than a Paddler

Before making history on the Amazon, Chmielinski had already established himself as one of the world's premier whitewater kayakers.

As a member of the historic Canoandes '79 Expedition, he participated in pioneering river descents throughout Central and South America, including the first descent of Peru's spectacular Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.

These groundbreaking expeditions expanded the boundaries of expedition kayaking and inspired generations of paddlers to seek adventure beyond the ordinary.

His passion for exploration has continued long after the Amazon expedition. Chmielinski has remained involved in scientific efforts to identify and document the Amazon's true source while mentoring future generations of explorers and expedition paddlers.

Nearly four decades later, Piotr Chmielinski's Amazon expedition continues to stand as one of kayaking's greatest achievements.

His journey reminds us that true exploration is fueled not by technology, but by curiosity, preparation, perseverance, and the courage to pursue what others believe is impossible.
