The Great Lakes are often called inland seas—and for good reason. Their massive size, unpredictable weather, powerful currents, and remote shorelines have challenged sailors, explorers, and paddlers for generations.
Among those who have answered the call of these waters is one of the most remarkable expedition paddlers of our time: Traci Lynn Martin.
Her journey across the Great Lakes was not simply a test of physical endurance. It was a mission built on determination, resilience, and a belief that adventure does not have an expiration date.
A Record-Breaking Great Lakes Adventure
In 2017, Traci Lynn Martin set out on an extraordinary expedition to circumnavigate the Great Lakes by kayak. Launching from Port Huron, Michigan, she began a journey that would take her around some of the largest freshwater bodies on Earth.
Her route included Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior, and on October 15, 2017, Martin became the first known person to circumnavigate those three Great Lakes in a single calendar year.
The expedition covered thousands of miles through some of the most challenging paddling environments in North America. She battled cold temperatures, high winds, remote shorelines, and the isolation that comes with long-distance solo expeditions.
